Join us for an on-site studio visit with current Virginia A. Groot Material Exploration Resident, Linda Nguyen Lopez.
The Virginia A. Groot Material Exploration Residency at the Center for Craft is a six-week visiting sculptor residency based in Asheville, North Carolina that allows a sculptor the time to develop their work and share learning experiences.
Lopez's current work attempts to weave together the obscured cultural pasts of her mother, a Vietnamese refugee, and her father, a Mexican immigrant. Each piece is covered in small hand cut colored porcelain tiles in shapes that reference historical Vietnamese and Mexican textiles that fit together to make an intricate hybrid mosaic, which subtly shifts in color across the objects’s surfaces. In approaching these works, the viewer can search for patterns, find gaps, and contemplate the nature of a composite identity and fragile cultural histories.
The Material Exploration Residency is made possible by the Virginia A. Groot Foundation.
This event is free, accessible and open to all.
