The Center for Craft (previously known as The Center for Craft, Creativity & Design), a national 501c3 nonprofit arts organization located in downtown Asheville, NC, is currently seeking a Development Director. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Development Director will oversee comprehensive campaign fundraising efforts including annual fund, events, and the final 6-months of the capital campaign public phase.

This position is full-time and exempt with occasional evenings/weekends. The position will supervise contractual support and/or interns. Starting salary is $58,000 with full benefits to include Medical/Dental, Life Insurance, LTD and STD, and 401K as well as 5 weeks paid leave and recognized federal holidays.

The successful candidate will have development experience and be eager to grow the development activities of both the board of directors and staff. They will be versatile, creative, and entrepreneurial, equally comfortable as an event organizer, front-line fundraiser, database administrator, proposal writer, and volunteer manager. Special consideration will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience closing gifts of five-figures or more.


Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years fundraising experience with demonstrated ability to close gifts.

  • Excellent communication skills, with ability to articulate ideas clearly and concisely in written and oral format. Ability to write effective and persuasive copy for donor correspondence, grant and sponsor proposals, and other materials.
  • Database management skills necessary; experience in manipulating and analyzing customer service/sales/donor data preferred (Little Green Light).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and team orientation critical to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strategic and creative thinker and can work on multiple projects simultaneously within limited timeframes. Requires excellent organizational skills, time management efficiency, and careful attention to detail.
  • Must be outgoing and able to professionally and confidentially represent the Center to all public constituencies.


1) Event Management

  • Manage the event logistics and host committee for an annual benefit
  • Plan and coordinate three to five special cultivation events (in- or out-of-state) each year
  • Create strategies and tactics for high donor engagement and stewardship at exhibition openings and other program-related events
  • Oversee donor participation in the Campaign Grand Reopening Event, scheduled for November 15, 2019
  • Manage development program and special event budget(s)

2) Annual Fund and Campaign Programming

  • Project manage the annual fund including individual solicitations, support of board and staff solicitations; creating one annual fund campaign for mail and two for social media; benefit administration and stewardship of Inner Circle society program, membership and exhibition/program sponsorships; associated cultivation events (listed above)
  • Oversee the public phase of campaign and donor recognition/engagement
  • Develop strategies to increase both the number of individual donors and average giving levels using annual fund programs
  • Maintain accurate donor records, timely processing and acknowledgment of all charitable contributions and general donor correspondence, and fulfillment of donor benefits

3) Prospect Research and Writing

  • Prepare prospect profiles and research to support individual solicitations (by self, staff, and board)
  • Ghostwrite emails for board members/staff for further edits
  • Research potential partnerships with local and national businesses, and develop materials for sponsorship packages and in-kind donations
  • Research foundation and government grant announcements and requests for proposals; add prospects to the master schedule
  • Collaborate with programming team on the drafting of grant proposals and reports

4) Volunteer Manager and Team Player

  • Serve as staff liaison to the board of director’s Resource committee, supporting board members on their action items as well as taking and circulating minutes
  • Coach both individual staff and board volunteers on strategies to secure additional contributed and earned revenue and diversify funding base
  • Create giving reports for trend analysis and tracking
  • Perform additional general office duties as needed, including interface with other staff to gather reporting information
