Beginning with the landmark exhibition Black Folk Art in America 1930-1980, my dissertation will examine the emergence of museum and market interest in self-taught and black folk art and craft in the Post-Civil Rights era. Examining exhibition histories, I argue that self-taught and black folk art and craft embody a kind of double authenticity, inviting "touristic vision" from museum viewers.
