Each resident will select a local craft organization to partner with for the exploration of a new material. The resident will spend up to 40 hours working with the selected organization.
This 8 week residency will take place at the Center for Craft’s Ideation Lab, in downtown Asheville, North Carolina. The two Virginia A. Groot Material Exploration Residence will work alongside two WNC Center for Craft Residents in a cohort of four. While each resident will be given their own space and ample time to work independently they will also have the opportunity to build relationships with the other residents and engage in studio visits with regional curators, museums, and/or collectors and explore regional craft schools (eg. Penland School of Craft, Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts, and John C. Campbell Folk School).
Each resident will receive a $10,000 honorarium, daily access (8am - 10pm M-F, 10am - 6pm Sa-Su) to an approximately 200 square foot studio space and shared studio resources, a Flex Desk Cowork pass in the Center for Craft’s National Craft Innovation Hub, and a facilitated partnership with a regional craft space to explore a new material or process.

Previous Virginia A. Groot Foundation awardees are invited to apply for a Virginia A. Groot Material Exploration Residency at the Center for Craft. This is a 8 week residency program in which two residents will receive a stipend of $10,000 each, lodging, daily access (8am - 10pm M-F, 10am - 6pm Sat, Sun) to studio space at Center for Craft in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, a Cowork pass in the Center for Craft’s National Craft Innovation Hub, access to one educational craft space, guided regional exploration including galleries, museums, archive, or craft school visits. Each resident will also provide at least one recently completed work (created prior to the residency period mutually agreed upon with the Center for Craft’s Curator) to include in an exhibition in the Center for Craft’s John Cram Gallery during the residency period.

REVIEW PROCESS
A panel of reviewers, who are recognized craft artists, scholars, and /or curators, free of any conflict of interest, will evaluate the applications. The 10 applicants with the highest cumulative scores will then be reviewed by the Center for Craft staff who will select 4-5 applicants to interview and check references before determining who will receive the two Virginia A. Groot Material Exploration Residency opportunities.

There is a $10 application fee. Applicants may request for the fee to be waived by responding to this email with the text, “Please waive the application fee for my application.” No additional information is required. No, hard copy submissions will not be accepted. The application must be completed and submitted through SlideRoom.
Can I work on my application and return to complete it at a later date?
