Center for Craft Announces the 2019 Materials-Based Research Grant Recipients

The Materials-Based Research Grant encourages mutually-beneficial collaboration between craft and the STEM fields—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This year, the Center awarded a total of $30,000 to four interdisciplinary projects.

  • $12,500 - Robotic 3D Felting
    Independent Artist Stephanie Metz and Assistant Professor of Industrial Design Virginia Tech Jonas Hauptman
  • $7,500- Tierrafiltra
    Independent Artist Amara Abdal Figueroa and Iser Caribe Director Braulio Quintero Nazario
  • $5,000- Visualizing the Invisible in 3-Dimensional Textile
    Art Institute of Chicago Assistant Conservator Isaac Facio and Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics Einstein Fellow Benedikt Diemer
  • $5,000 - Crafting Instruments for a Sea of Noise
    California College of the Arts, San Francisco Professor Donald Fortescue and University Paris-Diderot and Centre National pour la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) Astroparticle and Cosmology Laboratory Researcher Gwenhaël de Wasseige
