Meg Ross has been practicing pottery in Asheville, NC, since moving to the area in 2016. Originally from the Piedmont, Ross is a queer and visually impaired artist whose pottery intends for meaningful use as daily cherished objects. Her functional work aims to find a comfortable grip and durable construction balanced with simple elegance. Ross’ drive to create has grown from her desire for handmade kitchenware that tirelessly works in the homes of the visually impaired — standing up to drops and giving a comforting surface for the hands to connect with.
Ross is deeply inspired by early American pottery, particularly from the Southeast during the early 1900s. She brings her family’s history of dedication to craftsmanship into her work as she strives to make pottery that people can bond with and pass down through generations.
Primarily working on the potter’s wheel, Ross initially studied at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, where she focused on ceramics. She continued to develop her practice through classes at regional craft schools, incorporating hand-building techniques to alter wheel-thrown vessels. Ross has been teaching pottery classes for over two years, and since 2023, she and her wife Jamie have maintained the creative partnership of Ross Pottery.
