Windgate-Lamar Fellowship

2025

My work is governed by my phobia of insects, and through trauma exploration, I've unlocked doors that let me openly talk about my relationship with my sexuality as a Latina woman, while still referencing my core values of family, home, and culture. I investigate the effectiveness of art in exploring trauma across media by drawing on concepts from child studies and art therapy. I aim to use my practice to better acknowledge our invisible wounds while creating a safe space for self-reflection and using it as a tool for community healing.

My work honors the traditional values and processes surrounding my Colombian culture by referencing the relationship I share with the natural world, although turbulent. The repetitive fiber-based techniques I follow suit the investigation of my dreams, memories, and lived experiences, forcing me to comfortably converse with them. I reference feminist craft, seeking to create dialogues between traditional craft and the contemporary approaches that are prevalent in my work.

Being an educator parallel to my practice has let me experience the unifying power of art as community healing firsthand, and has shaped my passion for social and community outreach and emotional interaction. I aspire to inspire healing in the people who emotionally interact with my work, hoping to create avenues for people to explore their narratives in a more meaningful way.
